building vocabulary, improving literacy
The Teen Spelling and Literacy Challenge is an annual literacy improvement program, designed to help students improve upon their reading and writing skills through spellings and other vocabulary building interventions. Its start from February and ends in June every year. The first edition which was in 2024 saw about 30 students participating. In 2025, the number of students increased to about 220 students.
The competition is opened to both public and private schools. The eligible age is 7-13years.
Students with the desire to join the competition are registered for the auditions at a fee (revised as and when). During the auditions, a combination of oral spellings and dictation is applied to select those who will qualify to the quarter finals. Auditions are done between the 3rd and 4th week of February annually.
The quarter finals run from February to April. At this stage, contestants accumulates points over a three (3) week period after which an eviction is done. During this period, all contestants take 50 words dictation after which the points are summed and those below the required points evicted.
The semi-finals run from April to May. At this stage, contestants accumulates points over a three (3) week period after which an eviction is done. During this period, contestants take a story based dictation (i.e. they are given a story to read and learn how to spell all the vocabularies in the story). An eviction follows after the three (3) weeks story based dictation.
Depending on the number of contestants. twenty (20) contestants will qualify for the Grand finals in June.
Our program has improved the love for reading amongst students evident in their writing and oral profundities.
